I used to spend at least 30 minutes a day going through bogus comments on my site. Definitely unproductive. I've been happy with the default Askimet filter for spam (it's blocked over 10,000 spam comments and trackbacks for me), but I set Wordpress to require approval for comments with more than one link in them too for extra protection.
