I'm a bit surprised that you didn't mention either VMsafe or vShield Zones. Their seemed to be a bit of interest in those around the net last week.

Indeed, hot cloning of virtual machines is available to us prior to the release of vSphere. VM hot cloning was introduced in VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 2. See the following release notes: http://www.vmware.com/support/vi3/doc/vi3_esx35u2_vc25u2_rel_notes.html

Am I living in a parallel universe? I thought I used hot cloning just yesterday? Let me check... Yes I did use it yesterday!! Actually, we've been using it for quite some time now and we are running ESX 3.5 U2 with vCenter 2.5 u3? Sure, when the clone is powered on and you log in for the first time, you get the Unsuspected Shutdown message, but thats understandable...

Ive just checked it now and I can confirm that I am able perform a hot clone while the source VM is running. Can anyone else investigate and let me know if you have the option to do hot cloning. IT CANT JUST BE ME....

Hot Cloning already appears to be here with Update 4 for vCenter.
Well at least on our test system here it appeared to work cloning a windows 2003 server. When we started the clone up windows reported an unexpected system stop but worked fine.
Other than an quick initial test we haven't had a chance to look into the process further.

My two cents...
After hot cloning a VM you could just disconnect the NIC and log in locally (or with caches credentials) and run Sysprep if you don't want to mess with the guest customization stuff. Also, don't forget that FT only works with single-CPU VMs. I personally think FT should be free until it supports more than one CPU--or at least very inexpensive. I would hazard to guess that most workloads that critical would also have more than one CPU.
