Hi Saqib,

Wouldnt you just move the mail.domain.com address to point to the exchange 2010 server rather than the older 2003 server...?

i am planning to upgrade exchange 2003 to exchange 2010. My exchange 2003 environment has 2 backend and 1 front end server, my question is, once i upgrade the backend servers, and shift my mailboxes to new (exchange 2010) server, can i provide my front end SMTP (exchange 2003) to relay emails of exchange 2010?

Mine failed during the step "Removing public folder stores from public folder replica lists" with the error " A problem has been encountered in the Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services setup component. Cancelling setup"

It then restarted all the services, which all returned various errors. It then said it completed, then said in order to remove remaining files, you must reboot. It was then removed from add/remove programs.

After the reboot, the services remained, I just disabled them, and moved on, we wiped and re-purposed the server a few days later.

Nice article. Keep in mind that most probably you will be upgrading to Exchange 2010 SP1 which is a bit different like:
- you don't have to run the script that installs the required server roles and features - this option is included in the setup wizard (as a checkbox)
- Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs (you don't have to upgrade the 2007 filterpack, just install 2010 which includes 2007) are registered automatically.
- The issue with legacy Outlook 2003 clients (which do not have encryption enabled) is solved.

etc.

Andrew, I ran out of weekend and shut down the old Exchange VM after removing it from AD and doing the best job I could in ensuring it's name existed nowhere in AD or the Exchange organization. So far no issues. I have no plans to bring this VM backup and it will be deleted soon. If any issues do pop up, I'm sure there will be an article I can find somewhere on how to clean up whatever metadata funk remains in Exchange. I'm pretty well versed in cleaning up AD metadata from a domain controller standpoint. Been there/done that in both lab and production environments.

Did you figure out the uninstall problem you mentioned in #27, or did you decide to just leave the ExchOrg leftovers in AD and delete the server?
