Thank you Jason for a great article about the vcap5-DCD. My target this is year to pass VCAP5-DCA (which I sat yesterday) and VCAP5-DCD. I am now studying for the DCD and your write up has giving me a good insight into what to expect!!

It feels a hell of a lot better to reach the 95 question mark with 1+ hour remaining than Q62 w/ 40 mins + 3 designs left!

Good job Jason. Congrats for the exam.

Nice post which gives excellent ideas on the preparation not only from the technical (VMware) side, but also from the time management and question-reply tips.

Congrats Jason. I sat the VCAP5-DCD two weeks ago and passed. I found it more difficult than version 4 but I think that was because I wasn't able to study much at all. Still waiting on my VCAP5-DCA beta results.

Grats! Looking forward to giving my retry after the beta after VMworld. I going take some time out tackle the VCP-DT at World 1st. I have to agree hitting things that are in Blueprint that you don't deal with often just days before the test is good strategy. Jason it's not age! It's fatherhood and I am willing to bet your day to day job has you covering more ground too.

Great write-up, Jason, and thanks for taking the time to share your experience and the exam room tips. I know how you feel about trying to keep up on the certification exam treadmill. I haven't done VCAP5-DCD yet, but will surely need to soon. Just need to find the time!

Congrats on your DCD! I too took the beta and because of the testing issues, the only available day for me to take it was 3 days from when I registered - So (after the initial irritation passed) I figured I'd just pay my $200 to see the questions. I did glance at some of my notes form the DCD4, but i didn't study much. I used ALL of the time I had at the test. I pushed all of the flow chart questions off until the end of the exam. At the end, the test told me that I had failed - which was disappointing, but somewhat expected, considering the 3 days notice for (what I consider) a MAJOR exam.

I was told my official results would be mailed to me. 2 months later, I received an e-mail telling me that there was a delay, and that VMware was working with the vendor, then a few weeks after that, I received another e-mail effectively telling me that after the exams were re-graded, i had passed.

So, I passed by the skin of my teeth, but passing is passing. I was initially upset at the time frame given for the beta exam, with only a SINGLE person in charge of the accounts. That person was at PEX the first week I called and I had to wait until they got back to straighten things out (what if she had won the lottery and just quit?)... But I am happy with the fact that they took the time to straighten things out in the end. I just hope that the next time they set up a beta, they get their ducks in a row.

Hi Jason,

Thanks for sharing, there are a lot of valuable strategies in here, most of which I think I will adopt when I sit for this exam, which I am going to try to do before vmworld.

Thanks for sharing!

No problem Mike. Happy to give back whenever/wherever I can. Many years ago, reading about the exam experiences from other people used to put me at ease. I felt like I knew what to expect going into the room. Much better than going in cold, not knowing if the exam would be relatively peaceful or hostile.

Heya Jason,

Thanks for the post. As an up-and-comer studying for the VCAP-DCD, your post will surely point me in the right direction.

Thanks!
